PONTARDAWE TOWN U19’s 2 LLANELLI U19’s 4
The Reds Under 19 side completed Group D of The MacWhirter Youth League Cup with a 4 2 victory at Pontardawe Town on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds gave debuts to four new players, who joined the club this week, after being released by Swansea City. Full backs, Josh Doyle and Daniel Wilks, Midfielder, Aaron Houlihan and Striker Daniel Smale, all made good contributions to the victory and did not look out of place, even though they are all just 16 years of age! Playing at an age group three years ahead of them did not seem to cause them any problems and their inclusion within the Reds ranks will raise the standards even higher than they are at present!
With the inclusion of the four new players, the Reds dominated the early stages and they eventually took the lead after just 6 minutes when Rikki Evans continued his recent excellent scoring form when he hit the net with a fierce right footed shot after he got onto the end of a good cross from James Secker.
It was Evans again in the 13th minute when the home goalkeeper couldn’t hold on to his shot and the Reds were 2 0 in front!
A minute later, Pontardawe were given a lifeline when a mistake by Reds keeper, James Vyse, let them back into the game, when he mis-controlled a pass back to leave a home attacker with a simple tap in to reduce the arrears.
The home side were level on the half hour when some sloppy Reds defending at a corner resulted in them conceding a soft equaliser!
The Reds rallied after this set back and they continued to create chances and it was debutant, Daniel Smale who put them ahead again when he scored after playing a neat one-two with Craig Frater in minute before half time.
In the second half the Reds continued to be the better side and Smale and Evans both went close to increasing the score line.
In between these efforts, Reds Keeper James Vyse, made up for his first half error when he produced a memorable save by tipping a 20 yard screamer, over the bar.
On 68 minutes the Reds went 42 in front when Craig Frater scored with a low drive. Referee, Viv Nedin awarded the goal after consulting with his assistant, Phil Johns, who had flagged for an infringement!
The Reds will now be at home in the quarter finals to Cwmbran Celtic.
Reds Team. Vyse, Doyle, Wilks, John (c), Hayes, Williams (B), Secker, Houlihan, Frater, Evans, Smale. Subs. Samuel (Secker) Martin (Houlihan) Williams (B) (Smale)
